In an ever increasing competitive society you must strive to impress with a cover letter as well as a CV. They certainly are expected nowadays and when you go that extra mile to prove yourself you will make a lasting impression. First impressions are key. Make yours stick.

Creative, or innovative cover letters will attract the attention of the reader and immediately encourange them to want to read your CV/Resume. This should always be the main reason for writing one, to grab attention and stick out as a potential candidate.

There are several things that you can do to get to the top pf a very large pile with an excellent cover letter. Include the advice below and you should be well on your way to securing that interview.

1. -Look at your cover letter in terms of how it sells you, it is a sales pitch!

Your cover letter must begin with a proactive or interesting line to pull the reader in. Cover letters are no different. It is a good idea to treat the whole letter as if it were an extension of your CV/Resume. However, you must remeber not to include everything you have ever done in your cover letter as you will end up talking about things that are irrelevant to the job. That’s what your resume is for.

Be yourself. Be creative. But don’t lie.

2. Get Your CV/Resume Read!

THE PURPOSE OF EVERY COVER LETTER IS TO INVITE ATTENTION TO YOUR RESUME, AND TO GET IT READ… IN FULL.

How do you do this then? It is easy once you know how. Put yourself in the position of the employer. He/She is looking for someone that they know can do the job that they have advertised. How do you show them that you can do this job? You must address all of the requirements of the role that they have stipulated in the job advertisement. Additionally, it would be a good idea to add qualities that you know would be beneficial in your experience. This shows that you are aware of what it takes to succeed and are intelligent. It also shows that you have not blindly copied the job requirements down without any thought to whether you are capable of them or not.

Still keep in mind though this is a sales letter. You’re selling your ability to do the job. Keep selling, but be creative..

It is also a good idea to give the reader a little insight into your personality here as you cannot do this properly in your CV/Resume. Come across as warm, personable, professional and interesting. Look at what people they like to work with or employ and highlight these qualities. Ask yourself if you would fit in well with them and you will know where to go from here.

After successfully addressing each of the criteria asked in the job advertsisement you will need to summarise your letter to create a lasting impression and invitre the reader to give you an interview.

Cover letter tip number three:

Reiterate your main selling point and ask for an interview.

You must now use this as your opportunity to reinforce what you have just told the reader throughout your cover letter. This should normally be one or two sentences. At the end of this you will then ask for an interview where you can discuss the application further.

An appropriate closing moght read like this:

Thank you for taking time to read my story. I hope that you have seen how my qualities and specific experience can help your business achieve its goals. It is my loyalty and strong work ethic that will lead me to surpassing company objectives.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,
